Zagreb Film at LIAF

I don't live in the Capital anymore, so had to spend a measly one day out of a possible week at the London International Animation Festival. But I was glad that the day I picked - Saturday - included a feature on Zagreb Film.

I've always had a hankering for Eastern European animation since the BBC used to throw one down during technical difficulties. LIAF put on a fantastic showcase of a selection of Zagreb Film works, and just the tip by all accounts. Abstract, absurdist nonsensica sit nicely alongside some gloriously minimalist, 'cartoon modern' styles. If the animation didn't make me quite so happy, I'd be worried about the need for an eye test and potential sleeve straps before the screening was out.

Positioned nicely between the East and West, Zagreb Film enjoy access to and ownership of visual elements from both. A highlight for me was Dusan Vokutic with 'The Substitute' and 'Concert for the Sub Machine Gun'. Employing a unique fluidity to give UPA a good run for their money, Vokutic centres the action around simple themes and throws in animated devices from a refreshing and unexpected cranial angle. Keep an eye out for the costume change in the Substitute.

SUROGAT/ERSATZ / THE SUBSTITUTE - Dusan Vokutic
ZNATIZELJA / CURIOSITY - Borivoj Dovnikovic
KONCERT ZA MASINSKU PUSKU / CONCERT FOR THE SUB MACHINE GUN - Dusan Vokutic
MALI I VELIKI / LITTLE AND BIG - Zlatko Grgic
SAMAC / ALONE - Vatroslav Mimica
